VCP - Common Questions

VMware have their own landing page and FAQ page for their certifications, but I get emails and have conversations with people all the time who ask me questions like the ones below - so I thought I'd share them with you here...

If I haven't answered your question below, you can always email me at vmtraining.blog@gmail.com

Can I self-study for a VCP?
No you cannot - VCPs have always had a training requirement for first-time achievers.

Once you achieve your first VCP, there is always an "upgrade" path to the VCP on the next major version, and for achieving VCPs in other solution areas - so long as you don't let your VCP expire.

How many different VCPs are there?
VMware have 4 different technology areas that have a solution-specific VCP certification: (core products in brackets)

DCV = Data Center Virtualisation (vSphere & vSAN)
DTM = Desktop & Mobility (Horizon with View)
CMA = Cloud Management & Automation (vRealize)
NV = Network Virtualisation (NSX)

Why do I have to pass 2 exams for a VCP certification?
Each solution-specific VCP requires that you pass 2 exams:

1. vSphere Foundations
2. VCP exam for that solution

vSphere Foundations is classed as a "core" exam for all 4 of the solution-specific VCPs - the same exam is listed as a requirement for each of those VCPs, and you only need to pass it once regardless of how many solution-specific VCPs you want to achieve.

Each solution-specific VCP then has it's own exam, titled the same as the VCP itself - each of which only includes questions on the products for that particular VCP.

Are there certifications for major versions only, or minor versions too?
VCP certifications relate to the major version only - so for all vSphere 6.x versions there is just a single certification, VCP6-DCV.

Are there exams for major versions only, or minor versions too?
VMware don't always release exams for every minor version, but significant minor versions do get their own exams - this is made clear in the exam titles and objectives.

Using vSphere 5.x as an example - the exam VCP510 was originally for vSphere 5.0, when vSphere 5.1 was released the VCP510 was updated to make it applicable to both 5.0/5.1, but the vSphere 5.5 release saw a VCP550 exam that was specific to that version.

The simple answer is - it's best to check the titles and objectives for an exam.

Can I mix minor versions of training and exams for the same certification?

Yes, absolutely! Using VCP6-DCV as an example - you could be trained on vSphere 6.0, pass the vSphere 6.0 version of the vSphere Foundations exam, but then pass the vSphere 6.5 version of the VCP6-DCV exam (due for release in April 2017).

So long as the major version matches for all of the requirements - you're good.

Do I have to do the training before the exam(s)?
No, it is not essential to take the training first, although it is recommended. You can also pass exams in the "wrong" order - so the VCP6-DCV exam before the vSphere Foundations exam, if you wish. You'll achieve the certification once you've completed all of the requirements.

How long can I leave between the training and the exam(s)?
Technically, you can leave as long a gap as you want - the only deadline is the future availability of the training and the exam for that major version.

For VCP6-DCV, as long as you can get trained on one of the qualifying vSphere classes (6.0 or 6.5) and the vSphere Foundations and VCP6-DCV exams are available for you to attempt, you can achieve the certification.

Does a VCP expire?
Yes - after 2 years from completion. VMware announced a recertification policy for VCP-level certifications on March 10th 2014.

If you want to stay VCP certified in the future, do not let your existing VCP expire - read this post to learn more.

Must I visit a testing centre each time I want to attempt a VCP exam?
Every VMware exam is classed as either "proctored" or "non-proctored" - you can check this status on the page for the specific exam you want to take.

"Non-proctored" exams, such as vSphere Foundations, can be taken from any location with internet access - but "proctored" exams must be taken at a Pearson VUE testing center.

Can I get a free re-take or any other discount?

    This is a nice post.

I keep getting asked which is path most suited (sysadmin, network admin or storage..) for pursuing VCP training.

I am planning to give my exam in US but want to take course in other county. Is that possible to get certified? Also I am trying to register for course from VMware Site -> Services -> Education -> Course by country. Is that the right way since it takes me to their website for registration and fees as I don't have any VMware credits.
    Appreciate for your help

    1. The education and certification programs are both global, so you can take the course and the exam in different countries if you wish.

How you register for the course depends on the training provider - if it's VMware directly then your registration is done via the Education site you went to, but if it's a VATC (such as Global Knowledge or HP) then you are better going directly to their websites to register.

    1. I would suggest building up some experience with virtualisation using VMware Workstation or Player, then moving onto vSphere - you can run the vSphere components (ESXi and vCenter Server are the main ones) inside virtual machines - see how you get on and make a decision as to when to take the training and certification.

Well its bit confused situation for beginner to get to the right direction due to scattered info :-)
So, I need some info here,
1).I got time to appear for VCP5-DCV exam study, and according to vmware requirement I must go for course before I attempt exam, OR Do They allow me for exam and join course later? I mean Priority is must/ no priority?
2). I have join vmware vsphere ICM 5.0 course, because the academy is currently not offering v5.1, Will it make any difference in sense of Labs assignments, exam question, and will certification up gradation be required to obtain VCP5-DCV certificate? or?
3). You can get to know about VITA (academy) from vmware academy list weather the academy is approved by vmware or not, But how to verify the instructor ONLINE weather he/she is verified and ALLOWED to deliver ONLINE course?
Please clear my mind to answer my questions!
    Best regards!!

    1. 1. Until recently you could take the exam before the training, but now you must complete the training first.
      2. The exam is applicable to both 5.0 and 5.1, so it doesn't matter that your training is in 5.0.
      3. You can't - it's down to the VITA to ensure their instructor is authorised.

    1. Without knowing the specifics of what you already know it's tough to suggest where to start. If you're already comfortable building VMs with Workstation or Player, you could move straight onto vSphere - you can build a virtual lab with VMs running ESXi and vCenter Server to learn more about them. You will have to get trained on vSphere as part of working towards the certification. I'd suggest it takes a lot of people a couple of months from training to certification.

  11. Hi Scott,

I had attended the Official Training on VmWare vSphere ICM 5.1 i.e. Install, Configure, Manage Training this year from HP in which Trainer ( HP Guys as well ) often designated as VmWare Certified Professional Training on vSphere 5 as VmWare ICM 5.1 training or VmWare Certified Professional training. The Exam / Certification Code is VCP510 for the same as mentioned by the Trainer during the Class.

However, i am getting confused now since i haven't seen the Exam Name as VmWare vSphere ICM 5.1 or VmWare Certified Professional anywhere on the VmWare Site and within Pearson VUE site also.

Does the Name VmWare Certified Professional Training or VmWare vSphere ICM 5.1 Training got changed to something else during this Year.

I need to register for the VCP Professional Exam i.e. VmWare vSphere Insatll, Configure, Manage 5.1 Exam asap. Which is the Exact Link on VmWare Site ?

    kindly advise regarding the same.

    1. VMware don't make it a requirement that you hold certifications from any other vendor.

A good understanding of datacentre technologies (such as networking, storage, servers, operating systems, applications) will help with the -DCV certifications.

vSphere (covered in the -DCV certifications) does include virtual network switches, so in the networking arena a knowledge of switching, VLANs, and other associated network topics would be beneficial.

Assuming that it's virtualisation (vSphere) that you are interested in, you should try and build an understanding and experience of those technologies above and below where virtualisation is used - storage, networking, servers, operating systems, and applications.

I have taken the training for 5.1, am I able to study and take the 550 exam to get VCP 5 qualified (obviously I know I will have to be wary of differences)?

Also if (or hopefully when :)) I pass am I then eligible for a 'Whats New' style delta exam to upgrade to v6? If not what would then be the path to 6 (I'm guessing there is no way to jump staright to 6 cert with 5.1 training to avoid the extra certification)?

    1. So long as the major version of your training and exam match, you're good - training on vSphere 5.1 and passing VCP550 will give you VCP5-DCV.

    1. Take the VCP550 exam, it has no retirement date set and would still gain you VCP5-DCV certification.

If you don't do that, then yes you would need to take a class on vSphere 6 to qualify for VCP6-DCV (plus pass 2 exams)

If you do pass VCP550, you would then NOT need to take a vSphere 6 class, and only pass 1 exam to move to VCP6-DCV.

  37. Hello Scott, i had attended vmware icm 4.1 training in 2011 but didnt take an exam. I guess it is not possible now since 4.1 is retired and we have 6.1 version now. Am i correct?

    1. That's correct - your training won't "count" towards the current VCPs, so you'll need to meet the full requirements, this is the latest VCP6.5-DCV: https://mylearn.vmware.com/mgrReg/plan.cfm?plan=100942&ui=www_cert

    1. Yes, the vSphere 6.5 training courses are listed under the training requirement for VCP6-DCV - have a look: https://mylearn.vmware.com/mgrReg/plan.cfm?plan=64178&ui=www_cert

  39. Hi Scott,
Since I have done a self study I wanted to take up VCP Certification. Please confirm me if it's mandatory to attend VMware training in the authorized centers or can I take the exam directly in any of the centers and if yes, is it valid?

    1. This question is answered above - you must complete authorised training. The only exemption is for VCP6-NV and holders of certain Cisco certifications.

    1. There's no connection between VCA and VCP certifications, so it does not matter that you haven't done VCA. There are 3 requirements for a VCP though - training, vSphere Foundations exam, VCP exam - check path 1 here: https://mylearn.vmware.com/mgrReg/plan.cfm?plan=64178&ui=www_cert

  43. Hi scott,

I hold a valid cisco certificate (CCNP). is it enough to pass the vsphere foundation exam vspher6.5?
If yes, then after passing vsphere6.5 exam, can i try the exam VCP6.5-DCV?
or should i go only for VCP6-NV?

    1. Assuming that your CCNP is in either Data Center or Routing & Switching, then you can bypass the training requirement ONLY for VCP6-NV. Once you have the VCP6-NV, you can gain other VCPs such as the DCV. Check Path 2 on this page: https://mylearn.vmware.com/mgrReg/plan.cfm?plan=64294&ui=www_cert

    1. This question is answered in the main post:

Do I have to do the training before the exam(s)?
No, it is not essential to take the training first, although it is recommended. You can also pass exams in the "wrong" order - so the VCP6-DCV exam before the vSphere Foundations exam, if you wish. You'll achieve the certification once you've completed all of the requirements.

  45. Can I take vSphere Foundation and VCP 6.5 on the same day?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You could, but take into consideration that Foundations is a "non-proctored" exam while VCP exams are "proctored".

This means that Foundations is taken from any location where you can be online, such as your home or your office - but VCP exams must be taken at a testing centre.

    1. You can fulfil the requirements of a VCP in any order - passing exams before completing training is fine.

You don't say what versions of the exams you took, you would need to complete the training for the SAME version as the exams you took.

what can i do if i cant afford training fees because iam not a partner of VM and my company will not pay for this training i there any cheapest way for training ?? what would you prefer ?? i already send email to vm certification they said that if you are vmware partner you will get 20 % discount ?

    3. You cannot achieve the certification without the training - so you would need to invest and complete that requirement at some point. If you will have to pay for your own training, the most cost-effective way is likely to be with a VMware IT Academy partner: https://www.vmware.com/company/it-academy.html
